What is ISO certification?

ISO certification is proof that your business meets the standards set by the International Organization for Standardization, ISO. An ISO certification means that your company is committed to continuous improvement to ensure that materials, processes, goods and services are fit for purpose.

Does this sound abstract? Think of it as a recipe for the best way to do something. ISO certification can be compared to a recipe, where the name is represented by numbers and letters, like ISO 9001. This "recipe" is developed by experts in the field.

These experts, who are members of a non-governmental organization from over a hundred countries, have agreed that this represents the standard for good quality. If your business has a specific ISO certification, it means you follow the best practices recommended by experts in the field.

If you work with food and have an ISO certification for food safety, it means you are following the best standard set by ISO. Whether your business produces goods or provides services, there is an ISO standard you can be certified to. There are over 24,000 standards today!

What does ISO mean?

ISO stands for "equal" in Greek and is the name of the International Organizationfor Standardization. Since 1947, ISO has developed standards for most sectors. With members all over the world, the letters ISO indicate that the standards are developed internationally by them.

In Norway, Standards Norway (SN) is a member of ISO. Their task is to standardize in all areas, except electronics. Standards established and published by Standards Norway will have the designation Norwegian Standard and the letters NS in front. By looking at the letters in front of the ISO certifications, you can identify how the standard was developed. If the standard is developed in another country in Europe, but established by Norsk Standard, it will have the letters NS-EN in front of it.

ISO certification ensures high quality

The most well-known ISO standards in Norway are quality and environmental management systems. Norsk Standard has published the most widely used standards for quality management systems, such as NS-EN ISO 9001 and 9004.

The environmental management systems are called NS-EN ISO 14001 and 14004, often referred to as ISO 9000 and ISO 14000. Other ISO standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 45001 may also be compatible with these.

Why your business should be ISO certified

Not every business needs an ISO standard. The purpose of ISO certifications is to address the most relevant challenges for your business. Do you want to ensure that your customers are satisfied? Then ISO certification with guidelines can be useful. It can also contribute to increased revenue for a business. Often the public sector and larger organizations require ISO certification. With an ISO certification, you show that your business has a quality-assured and credible system.

ISO certification can act as a key to new markets, improve relationships with suppliers and has the potential to transform internal processes. This can lead to significant cost savings over time. The financial and operational benefits, as well as the gains for customers and employees, are essential elements that underline the value of ISO certification.

How to get your company ISO certified

To become ISO-certified, the company must undergo a complete survey depending on the desired ISO certificate. ISO 9001 requires, among other things, quality objectives, process descriptions and an effective management system. It can be advantageous to seek help from an independent third party with expertise and experience. The ISO certificate is issued by approved certification bodies.
